Investigation of artificial intelligence as a tool for student learning outcome: Opportunities, ethical challenges, and mitigation strategies in the Nigerian tertiary context

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education is transforming teaching, learning, and assessment practices. While AI technologies offer significant opportunities to enhance student learning through personalisation, efficiency, and data-driven support, they also introduce complex ethical challenges, particularly regarding academic integrity. This study examines the role of AI in student learning outcomes within the Nigerian tertiary education context, with particular emphasis on the risks associated with its misuse. A qualitative case study was conducted at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, using open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with academic staff and students. The findings reveal widespread adoption of AI tools among students, accompanied by emerging patterns of overreliance and integrity-related concerns, including automated essay generation and attempts to circumvent plagiarism detection systems. These developments raise important questions about the reliability and validity of conventional assessment practices. The study argues that effective integration of AI in higher education requires a balanced governance approach that combines pedagogical adaptation, institutional policy development, and technological safeguards. It recommends the adoption of advanced detection mechanisms, structured training programs on ethical AI use, and collaborative engagement among educators, administrators, and policymakers. Such measures are essential to harness the benefits of AI while preserving the credibility and integrity of higher education systems.
